Right now its generally about building PR (as well as traffic etc), getting links to build PR takes time, and encouraging people to give back links means giving something either of value or for free, as there's no value in a new directory, it has to give something for free... so it gives away links.

Once a directory has a bit of PR it can start a paid/featured submission service as the site is offering something of value (a link on a PR'd site) in return for the fee.

I run a few blog sites and its the same story, to create value (in a dating site's case this means members), you have to offer the service for free, later when the site has value (it has some members for new ones to contact) you can change some of the free features to paid.

To start a free directory and require the submission process to include submitter registration and actually visiting the category you'd want the site listed in, I think it would work as a way to reduce the amount of useless links and miscategorized links. Anyways, you would start free to gain PR and experience working with directories and later move on to paid. You can always go back an delete free links you may not want in the directory.

Hehe guys.. All things in the internet is not about money.. There are people that don't just start a directory for the money reason, dmoz is a superb example. Not saying it is good nowadays, but I they we're not bad when they we're running properly. To run an extremely qualified, I'd say you have to go for free inclusions, otherwise you may loose some of the sites that don't have any money to spend/promote

Firstly we have the newly popular “link bid script“. This can be downloaded at http://www.linkbidscript.com/. The advantages of this script are quite numerous. Its free; you can get it installed for free; you can get free furture upgrades; and there are many free templates to download. This script looks quite promising. Any downsides to this may be lack of support as the script is free, lack of development due to no sales revenue, and perhaps lack of user contributed modifications and templates as the script is new on the market.

Next we have the phpLD bid script. The script is based off the market leading php link directory script, which can be downloaded for free at http://www.phplinkdirectory.com. The advantages other than it being free include that it is based on the most widely used web directory script available, so there is an enourmous amount of mods, templates, support and help available out there. That includes a huge official forum with thousands of members to help you out. There are however some big disadvantages. Firstly the script is free so may lack future developments. Also, the biggest worry i feel is, the script was never made to be a bidding directory script. There are little advantages to be listed on the homepage other that you may be listed on a page with higher page rank. Bidding directories are supposed to give traffic to listed sites, and the way this script was built, this is not maximised to good effect. Top bidding sites are often shown towards the bottom of the page under a hughe amount of categories. Of course, this could easily be changed by re-arranging the design, however I feel as the script was never made to be a bidding directory script it does not offer directory owners the potential to maximise their earnings using this script.

The next script is the market leader in bidding directory scripts - phplinkBid. It is my personal favourite which is why i use it on Zorg Links. It is packed with features, and those it lacks look set to be added in the soon to be released version 1.4. The script can be downloaded at a tiny amount of $30, available at www.phplinkbid.com. The $30 is a small price to pay for what could ultimately earn you several thousand dollars a year. There are many mods and free templates around already, and the site includes a nice active forum to help new users get established.

The next type of scripts arouund are bespoke/custom “off the shelf” scripts. These are made just for the directory owner, specifically as to how they want the script to work. The advantages of these scripts are that your directory will be unique. It shows you have spent time and money trying to look different from other directory owners. Good examples of custom made scripts are the popular big web links and ventedoy. They look great and have all the features that other bidding directories have, plus more such as the ability to be notified when your listing gets out-bidded. The disadvantages of these scripts are few, mainly it will be quite expensive to get one made for you, and they are not publicly used so any bugs may not be found and fixed as quickly.

Google to Webmasters: Reciprocal Linking will get you BANNED!

Amazing! You’re gonna want to bookmark this one. According to the new Google Webmaster Guidelines regarding Search Engine Optimization, “Web sites are no longer permitted to exchange links” which is one of the fundamental practices on the internet (which predates Google BTW). Do notice it explicitly states “Link to me and I’ll link to you” is Reciprocal Linking an activity that Google considers a “Link Scheme” that has a likelihood of getting you BANNED!

As Matt Cutts acknowledged, Webmasters are free to do whatever they please with their Web sites and Google is free to do whatever it wishes with its index. This is all “well and good” as I tend to agree with the sentiment. However, a fundamental practice that has been around as long as the modern browser is now being considered as “off the reservation” behavior is troublesome. What about a trackback? You’ve now traded a link with someone by just linking to a site. Without any reassurance or details, all webmasters are left with is a broad range of assumptions. As you would expect, webmasters whose livelihood depend on the success of their websites who are now presented with the possibility of getting banned are extremely worried as related in Michael Martinez’ blog post at SEOTheory. While we may disagree with Michael on a few of his points and tactics, it’s the comment from Google employee Adam Lasnik that has caught our attention.
Instead of empathy or reassurance, Google shows contempt for SEOs and Webmasters:

“Like other Googlers, I welcome and encourage feedback… heartfelt, blunt, and thoughtful feedback. But angry clicks, petulant no-follows, and, quite frankly, unbecoming temper tantrums do nothing to help Google help webmasters… or help webmasters help themselves.” - Adam Lasnik of Google

Sorry but if you’re not even open to letting webmasters vent their frustrations without calling them out with implicit accusations of immaturity, then this is what I see the real problem as being. It seems to be an “ivory tower” mentality that Adam has towards webmasters. That being said, we looked into what Adam’s job description is at Google…
A rundown of Adam Lasnik’s responsibilities at Google:

“My main focus is on broadening communications between Google and Webmasters… learning as much as I can from both Matt and the Webmasters he chats with so amiably and then building upon this rapport. Or, more colloquially, as it’s been joked around the office, my uber-challenging goal is to become a “MiniMatt.” Though a colleague did note that a MiniMatt sounds like a scary cross between a convenience store and a diminutive vacuum cleaner. Hmm.

You’ll find me hanging out at Webmaster conferences and various geek gatherings, occasional replying to Google-related blog or forum posts, tackling some Webmaster-related e-mails, and undoubtedly popping up in other random places.

I’ll also be a “Webmaster Advocate” inside the Googleplex. I’ve seen firsthand that tons of folks here already eagerly read and appreciate Google- and search-related comments throughout the Web; I’ll be doing what I can to expedite concerns, bug reports, and other feedback to the right colleagues.”

As a “Webmaster Advocate” we would like to think that Adam’s initiative regarding his response to unrest would be more supportive. Does Adam’s quote help at “broadening the communications between Google and Webmasters” as his job description states? Being receptive to the webmaster community means being receptive to their concerns - no matter how “petulant” and “unbecoming” their frustrations may seem… to Google anyways.
Here is our take on the “Reciprocal Linking for SEO” controversy.

1. We don’t do it; we don’t recommend it - good thing.
2. This is an attempt for Google to control Spam - good thing.
3. This is a rule that Google has imposed on the entire web community that predates their existence - bad thing.
4. This is an example of Google placing the burden of fighting spam in THEIR index firmly on the web community - bad thing.
5. The biggest problem is that representatives of their company are adding insult to injury in what I believe to be a patronizing and contemptuous way - bad thing.

Why Yahoo publisher is not in every countries like the Adsense?

Beta has nothing to do with the countries they don't allow. Gmail is in "beta", but does it just allow United States citizens? No. Also, YPN has never stated it would allow people from outside of the United States into their program.

Well, I think here is the problem . Are not many advertiser on India or other countries, to go to pay to yahoo and few customers, also in this countries the click fraud is very high. It is all about market, have client send ads, else no.

So the advertiser of yahoo and possible future advertiser are in majority from USA and they want only USA sites for USA customers ,USA owners to limit click fraud , because they can control better sites and revenues from USA owners then from India,Pakistan and other countries.

It is about what the advertisers want.If Yahoo don't have advertisers that want others zones than US , they don't go. I hope they will come in european countries. A friend who work for a firm that manage the adwords campaigns for some european firms(from Germany,Italy,Luxemburg,Netherland), say to me they had 84000 clicks from asian zone and no sell.Also clicks from Eastern Europe are coverting very bad in sells. So, they now use some methods to avoid users from that zones to see their ads and click.

There are a majority of YPN advertisers I know, plus myself. I don't see why I shouldn't able to use their publisher program. I think it's time we need to think about, or they, eventually they should come out of beta, but who says they'll spread globally once out of beta? - They may just continue to stick in the US Market.

I think YPN don’t have that strong anti fraud system like Google and for yahoo major portion of revenue are from US. Expanding there network in countries from Asia or Middle East can drop there trust for their advertisers and this could cause a revenue drop.

I don't think YPN will be available this year, and not even for first half of next year at least. Now in the US alone, they are having so many issues. I've long given up on them, if and when they come but all the signs point to them not going global for a very long time to come. The only good thing I see is their Paypal payment mode. They seem even more strict than Adsense!

I don't think you are right to just put this bluntly. Yahoo has got a better coverage of it's maps for the entire world. Fir instance Mauritius, is covered fully in yahoo map, but not in google map. That's a plus. Thus, they will be able to better control it. I think USA is a massive internet user, it is better to work on a region with a massive concentration to have a better idea and to be able to improve upon quickly.

Many people believe that it is easy to make money from free articles rather then creative articles. If you're talking about putting free articles on your site, very little when it comes to monetizing for adsense. duplicate content not very favorable. however stick in a newsletter to build a relationship, yeah, I can see that. I think you'd do better to buy PLR articles and rewrite (or have them rewritten) them so that you can use them for AdSense pages. As BartG mentioned, you won't see much (if any) revenue with duplicate content on your pages. You could use the free articles in an e-zine, but remember that you will be giving links to someone else's Web site. You'd be better off writing your own and linking to your own site so people can buy from you and learn more about your own business instead of someone else's.

PLR stands for "private label rights" and it means that several people can purchase the same set of articles and use them however they like, within the rights specified by the creator of each package. For example, I am currently completing a PLR article package and I will allow buyers to use the articles in any way they like - Web content, e-books, blog posts, reports, etc. When you buy PLR articles, you are buying the rights to those articles, so there are no plagiarism issues.

There are packs of PLR articles for sale around the web, and they're very popular (I've availalbe on a number of topics if you're interested). The problem with these is just that: they're popular.
