Is it dangerous to run a directory?

I would like to know if operating a directory is dangerous because since your directory is linking out to a lot of Web site - there my be a bad site that you link to: i.e. a site that google considers shady - and then google will ban your directory as a result: and your directory will lose all its page rank and search engine rankings/traffic?

I am scared of this.

Is this a big problem with running a directory or not?

Running a directory is hard work, and you would normally review all submissions before accepting them, so it shouldnt be a worry.

How can you tell if a site is shady?

Also what if a site that used to not be shady when you approved, changes, and becomes shady?

You set some guidelines early on: (ie. no sites that are all affiliate links, no sites under construction, no mlm's, nothing that plays music, or whatever etc.) The rest comes with experience - you just start learning to sense dodgy sites. HINT: don't just copy what all the other directories are doing because most of them have it wrong.

You can't just wait for submissions with a directory. You have to go out and find quality sites to "seed" the directory with to start. Write your own descriptions for listings. If you wait only for people to submit you will end up with a bunch of cr*p, pharma, casino and p*rn sites and the directory will be worthless.


Interesting. So if you build a good foundation for your directory first: by filling it with quality sites then you will have a lesser chance of being penalized by the search engines later on.

google the site, check if it's in the google index, if is look at what websites link to it.
in the end - it a combination of common sense and gut feeling.
just don't build an automated service - because people will take advantage of it for the worse.

She makes some good points as to why SEO firms are different than your normal corporate office, and why working in a different way is important for SEO specialists.

* SEO requires a certain amount of creativity, flexibility and uncertainty—pretty much anathema to the corporate world. But without these things, your company’s services will become outdated and stagnant.
* SEO requires research and experimentation. Don’t expect to be able to devote 125% of your resources to slaving away solely for clients, unless your clients are willing to be guinea pigs as your SEOs try out new things—things that may or may not work.
* SEO is always changing. What works today may not work tomorrow. If something does stop working, it may take time to find another effective method. Time spent researching and experimenting can help to minimize that time.
* Learn everything you can about your SEO company’s methods and strategies. Encourage them to experiment and improve their methods. How To Bully Your Way To The Top of Google

Or rather anger the SEO community with one e-mail. After returning from a relaxing two week holiday, I was catching up with some blogs (no wifi on the top of the Eiffel Tower) and found one of the biggest head-scratchers I’ve seen in a while.

Blogger Dean Hunt received a rather strange request via e-mail:

On Thursday morning I checked our google positions and your site is now above us for this term. I have checked your blog and it has nothing to do with [edited], so I think it would be best all round if you remove your blog from google for this search term.

Please understand that we make our living from this, and you are just writing a blog that has nothing to do with [edited].

If you do not remove yourself from google for this search, then I will call them myself and have you removed.

Obviously from somebody who has no clue how search engines work and takes a rather rude approach trying to resolve the issue. Dean, was not sure how to reply to this e-mail and posted it on his blog for suggestions and received hundreds of links.

I just received your e-mail. My first question would have to be… Are you serious?

I had to re-read your e-mail three times to make sure my eyes were not playing tricks on me!

Here is some more info that may help you understand my stance on this:

a) I have never attempted to rank for the search term [edited], I seem to rank fairly well for [edited], which I suppose is fairly similar. But if Google prefers my site to yours then perhaps you should be asking yourself why that is.

b) There is nothing I can do about removing myself for that search term, nor am I going to attempt to do anything. I have no information on my site related to [edited], so I am sure that the searchers will generally visit your site instead.

c) You can contact Google if you wish! I doubt you will get a serious reply though.

Perhaps instead of wasting your time with e-mails like this you could work on improving your web site instead?

Anyway, good luck with contacting google, if you do get a reply, I would love a copy of their e-mail. I have prepared a nice little place on my wall to hang it from.

Firstly, I have to admit that I was not impressed with the sarcastic nature of your reply.

Secondly, I am writing to let you know that I have contacted Google and am awaiting their reply.

You have to understand Dean that an online business should be higher in Google than a blog.

Don’t forget that Google is a business as well, they obviously make more money from other businesses than they do from blogs, so it is in their interest that I am higher than you for certain searches.

I have also contacted my lawyer about this issue, so you should expect a letter in the post very soon.

I expect a reply soon.

The whole story makes for amusing reading, rather than buying a link, hiring a search engine specialist, it appears the guy has decided to burn money on a lawyer to pursue an argument which has no steam at all. Dean, has not released the source of the e-mail, or the search term, which for some raises eyebrows - is this genuine? Or is it an excellent demonstration of viral marketing?

Seo - Exclusive Blog Content Enhances Seo

As you may or not be aware, some search engines search for exclusive, specific or rare content. They look for content on your site that is not available from other sources and once they find it they then rate your pages accordingly. The beautiful thing about blogging is that your content does not have to be long or elaborate in order to get across a unique, point or piece of information that will impress the search engine. In fact the basic structure of your log should consist of about two hundred and fifty words of commentary and server who link or two to some interesting sites (including something on your own!)

There are individuals who write longer blogs but instead go to other sources on the web and rewrite articles that they have found. The problem with this tact is that a search engine spider may be able to note if it has seen this type of information before and not rank your blog page very high.

It is also a good idea to lure the search engine spiders by adding material frequently to a blog. When you continually refresh material it keeps them coming back. How To Get Quality Inbound Links To Your Website

To achieve a high rank on search engines, your website needs inbound links. In this article we explore ways to achieve this.

In another article we have discussed how Google assigns a page rank to websites and webpages and how this is a factor used by Google when displaying search results. In this article we will not go over the details of how Google determines the page rank, but simply state, that to achieve a high rank, you need inbound links to your webpages – and preferably from other pages with a high rank.

There are multiple ways of getting inbound quality links.

Directories
The aim of some websites is to list a large number of other websites in their directory. They do this in order to attract visitors who may be looking for the type of websites they have in their directory. Some directories are free whilst others charge a fee for inclusion – or a fee for skipping the normal queue of websites waiting to be reviewed and listed. In most cases, inclusion in directories will increase your rank as you get high quality links to your site. Note however that some directories do not offer quality links even though they charge you for inclusion. Before paying for inclusion you should determine if the page rank of the directory is so high that it is worth the investment to pay for inclusion. If not, simply choose other directories. The directory dmoz.org is large, comprehensive and free. It can however take months from submitting your URL to dmoz until they accept it. Articles
Writing and publishing articles on the internet is a good and cheap way of getting inbound links to your site. A large number of websites accept articles written by non-professional writers as long as they are of a minimum standard and they will post them at no cost to you. Some article websites allow the articles to be used on other websites as long as the author's resource box is included. In an article you may link to your own website and thereby get your inbound links. One article may be submitted to as many articles websites as you like, so the work for writing and submitting one article can give you many inbound links. Submitting articles to article websites can be a tedious and time consuming activity. You may therefore choose to use an offer from certain websites for them to submit your articles for you. You can write articles on any subject you like or hire someone to write an article for you. Websites with articles often have a high page rank so the links to your website can be of high quality. As with directories, you may want to determine the page rank of a site with articles before submitting your article. Articles have the added bonus of attracting visitors to your site because they may show you as an expert on the subject matter of the article.

Forums
There are a multitude of discussion forums on the internet. If you post to a forum and include a link to your website you get an inbound link instantly. Some website administrators will go onto forums simply to post a reply to a message with a 'yes, I agree with what that other person wrote' and may thereby get an inbound link. Posting to forums is a simple and effective way of getting inbound links, but if you post nonsense, then very few internet users will follow any of the links to your website.

There are many other ways of getting inbound links and we shall mention just a few here. Pixel advertising sites offer links to your site for free or for a very low cost. If you invest your time this may be a way to get as many as a thousand free inbound links, but they are unlikely to be of very high quality and you will have to spend a very long time. Other sites will offer you a free space for an ad or a link to your site. If it's totally free, it is probably not of very high quality.

Reciprocal linking is the practise of exchanging links with other sites. They link to yours if you link to theirs. While this gives you inbound links, it also means you have to link to other sites which can degrade your own page's rank.

In this article we have discussed how to get inbound links to your website for the purpose of increasing your page rank, thereby helping your online business. We have seen how forums, articles websites and online directories are a good means for achieving this goal.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh, officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh, is a country in South Asia. Bulletin board system

A Bulletin Board System or BBS is a computer system running software that allows users to dial into the system over a phone line and, using a terminal program, perform functions such as downloading software and data, uploading data, reading news, and exchanging messages with other users.

During their heyday (from the early 1980s to the mid 1990s), many BBSes were run as a hobby free of charge by the "SysOp" (system operator), while other BBSes charged their users a subscription fee for access. Still others were run by Internet service providers as part of their service to subscribers.

Bulletin board systems were in many ways a precursor to the modern form of the World Wide Web and other aspects of the Internet.
